We are proud to be "Neighbors Helping Neighbors".  Members of our Corps will tell you how rewarding and life-changing this type of service can be. We are a diverse group of accomplished men and women from students to grandparents and everything in between. We are here to help and would be happy assist you in the process of becoming a certified EMT and member of our team.

EMT Membership Requirements

New Canaan EMS understands the modern-day challenges of daily life, and the time required to manage homes, families, pets, school, jobs, friends, and social lives. We do require a minimum time commitment of 48 hours per month however, we work in teams and try to offer as much flexibility as possible while providing the town with superior emergency medical care 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Our Corps is made up of accomplished men and women dedicated to the health and safety of our community.

Shifts
New Canaan EMS volunteers work in teams and are assigned to three weekday or weeknight shifts and one weekend shift per month.  We strive to be as accommodating as possible with scheduling.

Training
We provide our members with training opportunities throughout the year to maintain sharp skills in order to provide the highest level of patient care.

Age Requirements
Ages 21 and over:   You may submit an application while you are enrolled in an EMT class.
Ages 16-20:              You must be a licensed EMT before we can consider your application to join New Canaan EMS.  You must complete an EMT class (there are many options offered throughout Fairfield County) and become fully licensed prior to joining our Corps.

High School Students
Students must be 16 years old to take the State certification exams.  Students who have completed their Junior year of High School must submit their Full Application prior to September 1st of their Senior year.  A Full Application includes the main application form with references, a completed medical form, and a signed background check authorization form. The September 1st deadline is based upon the typical length of time between application and active riding status as an EMT at New Canaan EMS (this includes application processing, evaluation by our Board of Governors, and our in house training process which averages 6 months) and our desire for members to serve a minimum of 1 year as an active member. For this reason, we encourage student applicants to get certified early in their High School career and apply during their Sophomore or Junior year of High School.
